Extras go in main fridge or cooler. Come on now.
→ More replies (1)84
u/Unbanable4221 4h ago
Extras? A month has roughly 30 days (give or take) while a 24 pack has, obviously, 24 beers. That means that if one is drinking a beer daily, they would be 6 beers short a month.
This means that:
A) dad didn't drink beers daily (sissy);
B) there was more in the garage fridge than one 24 pack, which could make your "extras go in the main fridge or cooler" statement much more believable.
107
u/Practical-Sleep4259 4h ago
It's called drinking mans math, you automatically claim only 50% of your base consumption.
I'd guess that fridge pushed 30k+ beers including guests.

In the good ole days. Beer was just something you drank instead of water. Gave it to kids. Used to wean yourself off alcohol, when on the wagon.
They didn't even consider it drinking unless you were drinking hard liquor.
All those guys pounding Coors they'd consider sissies.

My mom could drink 12-18 beers a day. She did that for 40 years (that's at least 175,000 beers).

24 a month is completely reasonable. Mother in law went through 18 seltzers a day when on her binges and probably averages 6-12 a day. Shit was eye opening since it was my first time dealing with an alcoholic.
12
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 4h ago
18 seltzers a day!? Holy shit. That's like $30 per day.
She's spending somewhere around $7k per year on seltzer lol. That's like 16% of the average median income for an American.
→ More replies (2)9
u/PoisonIvyCrotch 4h ago
Yea her social security basically all goes to alcohol and then she asks for money when it runs out. Had to put my foot down and say she couldn’t live with us since we have kids now and she was constantly drunk around them. Not to mention I couldn’t keep any bottles in my own home since she would just drink it all. Not fun
3
u/Anonymous-tossaway 3h ago
I hear these stories about people drinking that much like 24 pack a day or that many seltzers a day and such and it blows my mind not even from the alcohol perspective but from the liquid perspective. After two or three beers I start to feel super bloated and full, it's hard for me to drink enough beer to get drunk without feeling sick just from the liquid and carbonation.
→ More replies (2)2
u/somneuronaut 1h ago
Liquor is much easier to abuse... though high ABV beer is pretty easy as well. Light beer is so much liquid.
3
u/Professional-Rub152 4h ago
Alcoholism doesn’t start at 18 seltzers a day. If your life routine revolves around alcohol then you’re probably on the road to alcoholism if you aren’t already there.

And beers that are sold in that amount are usually pretty weak. This is like criticizing someone for having a bottle of water a day.

Seems low for someone with a dedicated beer fridge.
5
u/_HiWay 3h ago
I mean, some other stuff can go there too, sodas, seltzer water, big pot o leftovers that doesn't fit the regular fridge, extra gallon(s) of milk/gatorade/whatever else comes in gallons, water, giant pack of those Danimals smoothie things, koolaid jammers, etc
Mine has all that and more and it's still lovingly called the beer fridge.

I put 5 cases in my fridge for a single BBQ.
At my peak I was hosting a BBQ at least once a month from may-november.
Beer would be gone by the time we went to bed.
Then, you'd have another full fridge for Easter, thanksgiving, and christmas.
Just from those 10 days alone thats 50 cases, aka 1200 beers.
10,000 beers is light lol.
2
u/PiccoloAwkward465 4h ago
At a certain point a pony keg becomes a good choice. I always feel bad about all the empties, even if they do get recycled.

It's usually Samsung products. They've been toying with the idea of putting ads in your fridge door screen and you can pay to have them turned off like a shitty mobile game.
7
u/CuriousOliveTree 3h ago
Wtf?! I genuinely wonder, do they actually think someone would buy that fridge?
11
u/Chewbacca_The_Wookie 3h ago
Because you're limited on options. It's the same reason HP sells a printer that is fully ready to go out of the box but requires you to pay a subscription based on how many pages you print a month. They know they're one of like 3 options for a printer and they're trying to see just how much they can get away with.
4
u/inbigtreble30 2h ago

Surprisingly they don't use that much energy when they are left closed most of the time. Even an old ass fridge like his might have inefficient cooling system, but unlike the main house fridge with 6 people opening it every 30 minutes and is constantly running.
We added a used stand up freezer and a "medium" sized fridge in our garage a few years ago. The power bill went up by like $15, and I'm in San Diego, the city with the nation's highest power bill. They maybe get opened up 2-3 times a week, so they mostly just sit there chillin'.
I will say though, I've never felt so middle class ballin' in my life than when we go shopping at Costco and can say, "Oh! Let's buy this huge box (of whatever). We can put it in the garage fridge/freezer!"

u/wolfgang784 2h ago
Yea my dad refuses to replace things till they break, but his fridge was almost as old as he was and when I checked its power consumption and his electricity bill and did some math it turned out it was costing him almost $50/m to power that fridge whereas new ones cost a few dollars for the whole year.
2
u/VonSkullenheim 2h ago
You did your math wrong, cause neither of those figures are right. An old fridge would cost like $150-250 a year to run, a new fridge would cost like $50-100 a year to run.

Just a couple months ago I spent hours and hours searching online for a replacement lid switch assembly because my wife loves her Maytag washing machine from the 90s.
Took forever to find the exact right part that would fit our model but it was successful lol. I'm sure 5 years for now it will be only harder to keep that baby humming.
My MIL has a brand new washing machine and constantly has problems related to some motherboard issue or computerized whatever, but this machine is just all mechanical as long as the motor and belt turn it should be good.

When my wife and I bought our house it came with a Samsung washer, dryer and fridge. The washer and dryer kept breaking so after our 1 year home warranty expired we bought Speed Queen washer/dryer. The fridge ice maker would constantly freeze over and stop producing ice. At this point it’s frozen over so no ice for us. I’ve basically sworn off Samsung products at this point…

Customers want them to be cheaper.
You like that $1000 fridge from 1980?
https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm
$4100 today... BASE... BEFORE adding modern features like ice maker, bottle filler, filtration, etc.
So now you're at 5-6k for what you want. But that 1.5k price unit at bestbuy sure does look tempting compared to 6k.

Or you're just indulging in survivorship bias. I've had our modern fridge for ten years now. Same with the washer and dryer.
3
u/RedditExecutiveAdmin 49m ago
we may also be approaching paradox territory
"modern appliances last 2-3 years", but a 10 year old appliance could be considered not modern
so all appliances that are modern fail in 2-3 years, because after that time they would cease to be modern anyway?

Ask him why he is letting it go.
3
u/JaneksLittleBlackBox 2h ago
Maybe he already has a dozen times and just doesn't want to keep putting more time into something that old that's eventually just not gonna work anymore.
Or, because of the age, finding the correct parts for a reasonable price can be a hassle. I've had to give up on repairing things in the past because the parts were so hard to come by that sellers knew they could jack up the prices.

Knock on wood, my garage fridge (a Kenmore) originally belonged to my parents and lasted them 20 years before I took it over. I’ve had it for another 15 years, and it’s still running strong.
Meanwhile, the Samsung fridge in my kitchen has needed multiple repairs; including a PCB, an ice maker wiring harness (before the ice maker failed entirely), and an LED light assembly that was basically another PCB. Both storage bins have also cracked in the last few years.
The garage fridge, on the other hand, has never had a single part replaced.

This happened to my parents and their garage chest freezer. It was an ancient thing from the 50s ish, had all the art deco styling and stuff. I was the very first thing they purchased as a married couple in the 80s at a yard sale. It finally died in 2017. When the appliance delivery guys came to haul it out and remove it, it turned out that the power cord had just corroded and fallen off the back. Since it was so old they hadn't bothered trying to fix it. They were actually really upset to see it go. Sad day.
