Not just a bookstore, a comic bookstore!

Interestingly, I just read the book, “The Sentence,” by Louise Eldrich, which is about a Native American Minneapolis bookstore worker during the events of 2020. Highly recommended as it put into context the current climate by reminding me of how we persevered through 2020. (Ps, fuck ice)

Louise Erdrich is, herself, a Native American owner of a bookstore in Minneapolis! It’s a great shop - Birchbark Books.

I gifted this to a curious friend who lives abroad to help explain what Minneapolis felt like in 2020.

Bumping this book up on my TBR, thanks for the recommendation! (And also yes, fuck ice!)

Just put my hold for this book on Libby! I've got a 6 week wait at my library.

DreamHaven Books & Comics, as a local I’ll be dropping in to support him and other small businesses!

I have family in the Twin Cities (so far all safe) and when we visit I would always drop by Dreamhaven. One of favorites in the area. Also try Uncle Hugo's if you're looking for locals to support.

Grew up in the Twin Cities, Uncle Hugo’s and Uncle Edgar Bookstores (same building) at 2716 E 31st St, Minneapolis is a great store for all you SciFi and Mystery books! And Dreamhaven 2301 E 38th St, Minneapolis is another great store. Maybe come spring I’ll be able to head up there for some new reading material.

"I got there about an hour after the murder..."
This right fucking here, call it exactly what it was, a state-sanctioned murder. Fuck this wishy washy language coming out of politicians (Obama one of the latest) and "news" stations, there's a precise word for it and that word is murder, plain and fucking simple
•
u/Late-Eye-6936 11m ago
Execution might actually be a better word.
•
u/Don_Tiny 5m ago
Might I put forth "summary execution":
A summary execution is the immediate killing of a person accused of a crime without a fair trial. This practice is often associated with war crimes and is illegal under international law, as it violates the right to life and due process.

I just tried accessing the Dreamhaven website and it’s apparently down…

Their site looks like it was built in 2005 and is held together with bubblegum (and I love it). If you're local just stop in and buy something, they're great people.

yeah, old school websites have a charm tbh! definitely worth a visit in person if you can
14
u/hardcoreufoz 2h ago
It’s just a really old and bad website. Visiting the store is like taking a time machine back to 1990, it’s amazing

There is an older GoFundMe that is still open.
I won't link it directly, but to add some legitimacy it's linked in this article about the situation they were dealing with back in 2020: https://shelf-awareness.com/issue.html?issue=3864#m50523
It appears that people have started donating again.
27
u/XpatMed 2h ago
After reading this post with his name, I searched GoFundMe and noticed that people found a request he made 6 YEARS ago about his book store and started donating again...

I remember 25 years ago when Dreamhaven had physical storefront in Uptown Minneapolis. My friends and I would drive down from the suburbs to buy comics we couldn’t find anywhere else. Was sad when they went all-digital, but awesome to see they’re still kicking ass <3

u/SunshineAlways 3h ago
I believe there’s a physical location as well.

u/fae8edsaga 3h ago
OMG! That’s great to hear! Do you know where?

u/surfergrrl6 3h ago
According to google and the shop's FB: 2301 E 38th St, Minneapolis, MN

u/parrotbug 54m ago
Yep. It’s still very much there and open; the whole street (38th) has a great business community. Two bookshops, a barber or two, a couple coffee shops, a couple gyms, a dive bar, a barbecue place, bunches of restaurants, tattoo shops, a couple local grocers including one with a great butcher department… come spend an afternoon!

Game stores near me have been having a revival as the popularity of board games and pen and paper RPGs explodes.

The website is being overrun with business, but as soon as it’s available, I’m going to place an order.

I'm so in love with this guy and what he's doing. I also love they're reporting on this. Fuck ICE.
But holy fuck, the grammar.
They screwed up his name after using it to end the previous sentence in the opening of the next sentence.
And this was all in the first paragraphs of the article.
Great article, I'm sure I'll be downvoted, but I just hate how I had to turn my brain off over and over to get through it. It makes it so amateur.

u/Trashypuppy 3h ago
I was there not even a week ago! He was the one who checked me out. DreamHaven. That place is one of the coolest bookstores in Minnesota, all comics, sci fi, fantasy, and horror. With vintage posters and stuff too.

Dreamhaven Books is a top-tier bookstore for weird fiction (they're my go-to source for Tartarus Press books). Cheering him on!

Its funny that there's no ICE agents in city's like Dallas, San Antonio, and Miami. Only the northern Blue states have immigrants apparently.
3
u/Double_Style_9311 47m ago
It seems that way based on the media, but ICE is definitely in those cities. I’m in San Antonio and they’re here disappearing people just like other places. I do think they’re more violent in blue states for a reason though.

u/upnorthguy218 3h ago
Oh man Dreamhaven is a gem. You should all stop in there if you haven't already.
14
u/werzberng 2h ago
He’s not a symbol. He’s a real, live person just like you and me.
7
u/maltonwode 2h ago
Exactly. Not that it diminishes what he’s done in any way but should rather inspire us to rise up to his level of commitment/action etc.

great bookstore! haven’t visited in a couple years, but it was my go to spot for horror novels for a solid minute there. will have to pay them another visit soon!

For me he represents all of us 70 and older who spent our youth protesting, to make this country better. Little did we imagine that we would be out protesting in our retirement years. You bet, we are all effing ANGRY 🔥

u/ADHDebackle 1h ago
He reminded me of Dale from the first season of AMC's The Walking Dead. I think especially around when they were at the CDC and he was trying to convince Andrea not to stay behind.

I used to go to dreamhaven all the time for my comic books. I lived just up the road from there and was probably one of the first customers in the new store on 38th. This was around 2008-9? He was a super nice guy and I remember seeing his son sitting on the floor reading graphic novels.

The hug of death!

Saw this on the news as it happened, pretty much summed up how a lot of us were feeling in the moment, but it was heartbreaking to hear it from someone who clearly shaken to the core for his community

Dream Haven is genuinely my favorite bookstore, even before this. There's so much cool and rare shit there, every time I'm in town I stop in and spend at least an hour in there and walk out with something fun. If you're into sci-fi, horror, comics, fantasy, etc. Dream Haven is the place to go. And support your local anti-ice book stores!! Love ya Greg!

What? The only insurrection was on Jan 6 2021. And I don't believe the University had anything to do with it. I think you're commenting in the wrong sub.

Love to see it, people talk a lot shit on social media and then come out in public and think they will never face consequences for horseshit that comes out of their mouthes, Guy probably had a plan, until the kid punched him in the mouth.

Bookstores are the bastion of all that I consider good in the world. Little shoutout to Sundog Books in Seaside, FL for all they do to combat fascism in DeSantistan.
