Bookstores are the bastion of all that I consider good in the world. Little shoutout to Sundog Books in Seaside, FL for all they do to combat fascism in DeSantistan.

u/XtraReddit 3h ago

Not just a bookstore. A comic book store. So many stories of defeating fascism.

173

u/hcregna 3h ago

We can be part of those stories. Among other things, it takes 30 minutes of research to move money away from MAGA, and it makes a difference. Dollars spent at Republican companies are dollars funneled to the Heritage Foundation. Money given to states like Ohio or Louisiana is money spent sending troops to kidnap children and kill people.

If you consistently do business with a company, you have power. You can use sites like opensecrets.org/orgs/search to search the exact companies you give money to, and where they give your money.

Trade with Schwab? Move elsewhere like Fidelity. Get booze from wannabe Confederate states and all else is equal? Be adventurous, and try something new. New Balance can be replaced with Hoka. It’s not hard to find alternatives for Goya, Roark (which owns Subway, Jimmy John's, Arby's), and Koch (which owns Brawny, Angel Soft, Dixie). You don't have to spend more or less, just differently.

If you have disposable income, consider the tax benefits of donating to the nonprofits successfully fighting the regime like the National Immigration Law Center, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, or Democracy Forward. And if you invest, consider DEMZ or an ESG fund

Nexstar and Sinclair got pummeled, and they reinstated Jimmy Kimmel. Real, individual people did that. There's no reason  WWE or Uline can't be next.

Completely avoiding companies that at least partially lean Republican is hard. But there’s a big difference between massive GOP donors (Chevron/Conoco) vs neutral or even Democrat-leaning ones (Circle K/Costco). Good is not the enemy of perfect

Thank you for this!

The Goods Unites Us app is an excellent day to day resource for putting your money towards beneficial companies. It lists contributions of brands and politicians to see if they align with where our $$ goes.

do you want credit if I repost your comment

42

u/hcregna 2h ago

Do whatever you want with it! I don’t really want credit, just a saner, kinder world

u/djsilentmobius 1h ago

Making a comment about defeating fascism with a GI Robot profile, is peak posting. 👍

u/ComedicMedicineman 2h ago

Them and museums. Apparently both some of the last trusted sources of reliable information according to polls

17

u/Accomplished-View929 2h ago

I love them and the record store above it!

13

u/Scorpionsharinga 2h ago

Knowledge keepers are the saviours of history.

9

u/anxietysoup 2h ago

I LOVE Sundog and so glad to see them mentioned here. I got married at Seaside and have been going to Sundog for nearly 30 years and probably have about that many of their tshirts!

Dude sun dog books are awesome; I love stopping by there and the cute little hats they have with the dog mascot

Bookstores are also the only business safe from leftist rioters. Nothing to loot for them there...

u/TheGhostInMyArms 17m ago

You: "I can't read a book, therefore they have no value hurr durr."

u/Beelzebeetus 11m ago

Thanks for the live update from the cuckchair. Meanwhile, back in reality...

u/SpaceTurtles 8m ago

On an Internet full of comments that showcase someone having no idea how anything works, this one's something special. I'd say "well done" if there were anything worth congratulating.

Libraries are controlled by the state. Yes it’s good to support local libraries but I’m not gonna hate on local book stores where i can find more controversial material.

14

u/TwelveGaugeSage 3h ago

This is in no way meant to defend the poster saying not to go to bookstores, but libraries generally have all the controversial stuff too. I worked at a library 25ish years ago and they had The Turner Diaries and Mein Kampf along with a bit of other controversial stuff behind the counter that you could ask for. If there is a book popular enough to be "controversial", your local library usually has it.

4

u/PoisonedBerry 3h ago

The ongoing issue across the country right now though is that state governments have been ordering libraries to take 100s of books of their shelves deemed "controversial"....which is code for "whatever the GOP deems as being woke."

I love libraries, I use mine all the time & I volunteered a lot for my hometown one as a kid....but we ARE going to see libraries pull more & more "controversial" books as this presidential term goes on, unfortunately. And libraries refusing to comply are getting their funding cut.

3

u/digbickrich 3h ago

Books i read aren’t always so popular but I make sure to always support my local Libraries!

Not just a bookstore, a comic bookstore!

63

u/Evening_Importance19 2h ago

comic books and activism? that’s the perfect combo. love it when local spots stand up for big issues

517

u/Big_Lil_Cat 4h ago

Interestingly, I just read the book, “The Sentence,” by Louise Eldrich, which is about a Native American Minneapolis bookstore worker during the events of 2020. Highly recommended as it put into context the current climate by reminding me of how we persevered through 2020. (Ps, fuck ice)

192

u/YouMustDoEverything 3h ago

Louise Erdrich is, herself, a Native American owner of a bookstore in Minneapolis! It’s a great shop - Birchbark Books.

24

u/namegoeswhere 2h ago

I went to high school with her daughter. Great family in general too.

6

u/Epyon214 1h ago

namegoeshere

55

u/Neina_Ixion 3h ago

Love the book. Love the author. There's a reason why fascists fear books

13

u/OddSimple 3h ago

That book rules.

12

u/bleepbloop1777 3h ago

I gifted this to a curious friend who lives abroad to help explain what Minneapolis felt like in 2020.

8

u/Glass_Source_8326 3h ago

Bumping this book up on my TBR, thanks for the recommendation! (And also yes, fuck ice!)

2

u/ucankickrocks 1h ago

Just put my hold for this book on Libby! I've got a 6 week wait at my library.

u/Gloomy_Raspberry_880 1m ago

If your library has Hoopla give that a look too. No wait times.

3

u/MarmotJunction 3h ago

Such a good book!

DreamHaven Books & Comics, as a local I’ll be dropping in to support him and other small businesses!

47

u/Randeth 3h ago

I have family in the Twin Cities (so far all safe) and when we visit I would always drop by Dreamhaven. One of favorites in the area. Also try Uncle Hugo's if you're looking for locals to support.

9

u/Razili 2h ago

Grew up in the Twin Cities, Uncle Hugo’s and Uncle Edgar Bookstores (same building) at 2716 E 31st St, Minneapolis is a great store for all you SciFi and Mystery books! And Dreamhaven 2301 E 38th St, Minneapolis is another great store. Maybe come spring I’ll be able to head up there for some new reading material.

1

u/Randeth 1h ago

I'm glad the Uncles were able to relocate, but I so miss the previous location. So many great memories there.

5

u/djsilentmobius 1h ago

Did their website get hugged to death?

3

u/mattely213 1h ago

Looks like it!

-8

u/Gemdiver 1h ago

As a protestor, now I know where to get free books when I'm in the area!

80

u/CanuckaChuckFuck 2h ago

"I got there about an hour after the murder..."

This right fucking here, call it exactly what it was, a state-sanctioned murder. Fuck this wishy washy language coming out of politicians (Obama one of the latest) and "news" stations, there's a precise word for it and that word is murder, plain and fucking simple

u/Late-Eye-6936 11m ago

Execution might actually be a better word.

u/Don_Tiny 5m ago

Might I put forth "summary execution":

A summary execution is the immediate killing of a person accused of a crime without a fair trial. This practice is often associated with war crimes and is illegal under international law, as it violates the right to life and due process.

73

u/johnnylion 3h ago

I just tried accessing the Dreamhaven website and it’s apparently down…

91

u/Kidney_Thief1988 3h ago

The ol' Reddit Hug of Death.

3

u/obvilious 2h ago

Slashdotted…

81

u/upnorthguy218 3h ago

Their site looks like it was built in 2005 and is held together with bubblegum (and I love it). If you're local just stop in and buy something, they're great people.

u/Western_Equipment197 15m ago

yeah, old school websites have a charm tbh! definitely worth a visit in person if you can

14

u/hardcoreufoz 2h ago

It’s just a really old and bad website. Visiting the store is like taking a time machine back to 1990, it’s amazing

3

u/Mystic_Nipple 1h ago

They are on abebooks

1

u/Deucer22 45m ago

There is an older GoFundMe that is still open.

I won't link it directly, but to add some legitimacy it's linked in this article about the situation they were dealing with back in 2020: https://shelf-awareness.com/issue.html?issue=3864#m50523

It appears that people have started donating again.

27

u/XpatMed 2h ago

After reading this post with his name, I searched GoFundMe and noticed that people found a request he made 6 YEARS ago about his book store and started donating again...

1

u/Deucer22 45m ago

The link to the GoFundMe is in this article: https://shelf-awareness.com/issue.html?issue=3864#m50523

43

u/fae8edsaga 3h ago

I remember 25 years ago when Dreamhaven had physical storefront in Uptown Minneapolis. My friends and I would drive down from the suburbs to buy comics we couldn’t find anywhere else. Was sad when they went all-digital, but awesome to see they’re still kicking ass <3

28

u/SunshineAlways 3h ago

I believe there’s a physical location as well.

7

u/fae8edsaga 3h ago

OMG! That’s great to hear! Do you know where?

24

u/surfergrrl6 3h ago

According to google and the shop's FB: 2301 E 38th St, Minneapolis, MN

3

u/fae8edsaga 3h ago

That’s amazing! Tysm! <3

2

u/parrotbug 54m ago

Yep. It’s still very much there and open; the whole street (38th) has a great business community. Two bookshops, a barber or two, a couple coffee shops, a couple gyms, a dive bar, a barbecue place, bunches of restaurants, tattoo shops, a couple local grocers including one with a great butcher department… come spend an afternoon!

2

u/Adjective-Noun-nnnn 56m ago

Game stores near me have been having a revival as the popularity of board games and pen and paper RPGs explodes.

18

u/The_Ombudsman 2h ago

Books! The kryptonite of the fascists.

5

u/Moontoya 53m ago

Physical books you own that can't be remotely deactivated or banned

13

u/chaneccooms 2h ago

The website is being overrun with business, but as soon as it’s available, I’m going to place an order.

11

u/Galle_ 2h ago

Good Guy Greg is real.

10

u/skyulip 2h ago

we love greg & we love dreamhaven

2

u/Akerlof 1h ago

I feel terrible, I haven't gone there since they moved off Lake Street like 20 years ago. I really need to get back there and back to Uncle Hugo's regularly.

19

u/KyleRoyceWorld 3h ago

Yeah, im with GREG

7

u/lghk 2h ago

(NOT Bovino)

22

u/krazyken04 2h ago

I'm so in love with this guy and what he's doing. I also love they're reporting on this. Fuck ICE.

But holy fuck, the grammar.

They screwed up his name after using it to end the previous sentence in the opening of the next sentence.

And this was all in the first paragraphs of the article.

Great article, I'm sure I'll be downvoted, but I just hate how I had to turn my brain off over and over to get through it. It makes it so amateur.

13

u/Trashypuppy 3h ago

I was there not even a week ago! He was the one who checked me out. DreamHaven. That place is one of the coolest bookstores in Minnesota, all comics, sci fi, fantasy, and horror. With vintage posters and stuff too.

7

u/FlyingAce1015 2h ago

I saw this video other day I hope Greg is doing okay..

7

u/Mysterious-Feed-2531 1h ago

Its always the bookstore owners! Gotta love people who read.

10

u/ashwharton 3h ago

Dreamhaven Books is a top-tier bookstore for weird fiction (they're my go-to source for Tartarus Press books). Cheering him on!

3

u/Razili 1h ago

I first found Phil Foglio’s comic books there. I’ve been a huge fan of his work since the old Dragon magazine in the 80s.

1

u/rogue_nugget 53m ago

Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

5

u/Brown-_-Batman 2h ago

That video clip and his comment is stuck in my memory since I watched it.

4

u/Koolklink54 1h ago

Its funny that there's no ICE agents in city's like Dallas, San Antonio, and Miami. Only the northern Blue states have immigrants apparently.

3

u/Double_Style_9311 47m ago

It seems that way based on the media, but ICE is definitely in those cities. I’m in San Antonio and they’re here disappearing people just like other places. I do think they’re more violent in blue states for a reason though.

12

u/upnorthguy218 3h ago

Oh man Dreamhaven is a gem. You should all stop in there if you haven't already.

9

u/Alict 2h ago

I'm so glad to see this! Dreamhaven is amazing, we go there all the time, and they totally deserve the boost they're getting.

14

u/werzberng 2h ago

He’s not a symbol. He’s a real, live person just like you and me.

7

u/maltonwode 2h ago

Exactly. Not that it diminishes what he’s done in any way but should rather inspire us to rise up to his level of commitment/action etc.

9

u/No_Idea_Guy 2h ago

His bookstore has a Wikipedia page!

5

u/BackpackBrax book just finished 2h ago

Hell yeah!

4

u/skull_with_glasses 1h ago

Looks like I have another shop to add to my list.

13

u/A_Peacful_Vulcan 3h ago

What a badass. Thank you Greg!

5

u/Gormane 3h ago

I live in Australia, but damn! If I lived there it sounds like it would be a great place to shop!

6

u/TIPtone13 2h ago

One of my favorite local shops.

3

u/bluefrost30 1h ago

I will absolutely be visiting his store!

3

u/Cynical_Classicist 1h ago

Aye, the world's eyes are on Minneapolis.

3

u/Rad-Ham 1h ago

Bookstores can make a stand without fear of losing customers. Maga doesn't read.

3

u/Upstairs_Spirit2923 1h ago

great bookstore! haven’t visited in a couple years, but it was my go to spot for horror novels for a solid minute there. will have to pay them another visit soon!

3

u/AliceHwaet 54m ago

For me he represents all of us 70 and older who spent our youth protesting, to make this country better. Little did we imagine that we would be out protesting in our retirement years. You bet, we are all effing ANGRY 🔥

2

u/ADHDebackle 1h ago

He reminded me of Dale from the first season of AMC's The Walking Dead. I think especially around when they were at the CDC and he was trying to convince Andrea not to stay behind.

2

u/muerde15 1h ago

Ah man I wish they were on bookshop.org!

2

u/coldequation 1h ago

Oh, shit, I met this guy at Dreamhaven Books when I visited Minneapolis about a year ago.

2

u/Training-Line-6457 55m ago

I assume this dude doesn’t mind being doxxed, but I really hope this doesn’t put him on an ICE kill list

5

u/soupsupan 3h ago

American fricken hero

3

u/MortusCertus 3h ago

Way to go, OP. Nice knowing you, Greg.

3

u/Major_Meow-Meow 2h ago

What a lovely man. Protect him at all costs!! 💜💪💜

1

u/Personal_Arugula_503 1h ago

I used to go to dreamhaven all the time for my comic books. I lived just up the road from there and was probably one of the first customers in the new store on 38th. This was around 2008-9? He was a super nice guy and I remember seeing his son sitting on the floor reading graphic novels.

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 28m ago

Over the weekend, the DreamhavenBooks.com website had crashed

The hug of death!

u/Whole-Designer 26m ago

Saw this on the news as it happened, pretty much summed up how a lot of us were feeling in the moment, but it was heartbreaking to hear it from someone who clearly shaken to the core for his community

u/Fluid-Set-2674 17m ago

It is a great store, and he is a great guy.

u/veganboinoah 10m ago

Dream Haven is genuinely my favorite bookstore, even before this. There's so much cool and rare shit there, every time I'm in town I stop in and spend at least an hour in there and walk out with something fun. If you're into sci-fi, horror, comics, fantasy, etc. Dream Haven is the place to go. And support your local anti-ice book stores!! Love ya Greg!

0

u/CoyoteScreamer 2h ago

Thank God! Those book burning will hurt business. Down with Nazis!

0

u/Le_Chien_de_la_Mer 2h ago

Dude is a fucking legend.

0

u/goneafter10years 1h ago

They'll probably just murder him too sadly.

Love to see it, people talk a lot shit on social media and then come out in public and think they will never face consequences for horseshit that comes out of their mouthes, Guy probably had a plan, until the kid punched him in the mouth.

u/vivonzululgwa 1h ago

So powerful, who cares
