This is a symbolic representation of our career as a whole… you experience things that gut you, you get a moment, then it’s literally business as usual.

This situation has gutted me. I am not ok.

May we all be like Alex. ❤️

I’m at work today just feeling fucking despondent. Seems just like any other day here. Gutted is the word for it.

“The Machine” grinding on and grinding nurses down. Did they at least do a moment of silence or something? Hospital CEOs likely identify less with an Alex than …

Please be okay. For you, for memory of Alex’s bravery and strength, for all of the Alex-s out there in the cold, standing up for what’s right.

i’m an rn on strike in nyc, already feeling so exhausted and dejected and pissed off after all the bs we’ve endured. the news of this man’s murder sent me over the edge, i was absolutely sobbing. i sincerely hope we can stay banded together as a profession and fight these evil forces that undermine us

I'm a respiratory therapist who works alongside ICU RNs every shift. Sending love and comfort your way. None of this is ok.

32

u/somedelightfulmoron RN, BSN 3h ago

We are all Alex.

I'm across the Atlantic and I feel the pain when we lost him. I fucking hate that there's nothing I can do.

u/ThatOneDiviner 9m ago

If you want, I’ve seen some suggestions for people overseas to pressure your governments/companies/peers into boycotting the 2026 World Cup matches held in the US. It’s not much, but anything is better than nothing.

24

u/duckface08 RN 🍕 2h ago

This is what strikes me, too.

I'm also in ICU and we recently lost a colleague (not to violence or political agenda, thankfully, but a sudden and fatal illness). But our work doesn't stop because we are sad. We squash those feelings down for 12+ hours and find another way to release the pressure inside us later.

It's such a unique grief only those of us who work in essential sectors experience. I can't even imagine what these people are going through. To be subjected to all the pictures, videos, political discourse, and the outright lies and slander disparaging his character while grieving and looking after your patients must be a unique sort of torture.

I grieve not just for Alex Pretty and Renee Good, but for those who knew them and are dealing with their loss amongst all the other feelings and obligations. My heart is heavy.

Reminds me of a speech from Scrubs

119

u/biobennett Clinical Research 4h ago

This one?
"You see Dr. Wen in there? He’s explaining to that family that something went wrong and that the patient died. He’s gonna tell them what happened, he’s gonna say he’s sorry, and then he’s going back to work. You think anybody else in that room is going back to work today? That is why we distance ourselves, that’s why we make jokes. We don’t do it because it’s fun — we do it so we can get by.”

- Dr Cox

31

u/ShortWoman RN - Infection Control 4h ago

Dark humor is how we cope day to day. It’s not going to work for this.

13

u/biobennett Clinical Research 4h ago

I agree, not appropriate for mourning Alex, just posting the full quote for context (ending the quote at "back to work" would have made it more fitting for the sentiment of this post).

Some dark humor to get through this administration may still be on the menu, just not in this context.

23

u/rharvey8090 CRNA 4h ago

Exactly that one. I went and found the clip on YouTube, but didn’t know if I should post it.

48

u/brit_chickenicecream 4h ago

As someone just starting out in nursing I have already experienced many of those instances and I’m only in my second year. Alex’s courage stands out, he is a hero and I will continue to think of him when times get hard or when I need to spring into action

48

u/taktaga7-0-0 4h ago

When a patient unexpectedly beat up my coworker, we had counseling and debriefings available to everyone.

Can’t imagine what the staff at the VA are going to need to cope with this.

24

u/brit_chickenicecream 4h ago

Once I had a patient with hep b take a needle out of himself and stab my coworker before being transferred to my unit. We only got to debrief for less than 5 minutes.. I hope they get the support they need. Real support

6

u/Rita27 3h ago

Is your coworker ok?

This must have been five years ago now, before covid. She came back with a black eye, but was really resilient. I know she went back for her NP.

It's interesting that my father, who is an ER nurse, and my stepmom, who is a director of Surgical Nursing for the VA in the Midwest, are both the biggest MAGA bigots... They constantly bitch about the poors and drug-seekers, the "entitled illegals" that wander into the hospital and whatever hateful and racist BS they can conjure up that day.

Their answer to this tragedy... "He should have been at work!!!"

12

u/pleasedontbedumb RN 🍕 2h ago

That's effing brutal. All I can think to say is, at least you can clearly see their faults and (hopefully) actively choose, every single day, not to react the way they would. That's how you win over evil like that- you don't do the right thing for accolades, you do it because it's right. Be the change you want to see in the world, and all that.

I'm really sorry you have to claim people who act so ugly as family. My dad's the exact same, and it hurts in my soul. Sending a hug if you want it

9

u/IndividualTension887 1h ago

I idolized my dad watching him literally run through the ER. He was my hero... I heard a story from his charge nurse about how a woman handed him a baby that was literally blue and dying, and he saved her life... My stepmom took shifts in the burn ward... They literally saved Veteran lives...

I could never understand the hateful rhetoric that would come out their mouths after doing thing like they did in those hospitals... I left and never looked back. I teach now, and sometimes wonder if I should have been a nurse...

5

u/PerYan2158 1h ago

Wow. This country feels so hopeless if that’s the attitude people are taking after a 2nd public execution in 2 weeks in the same city. There was less public documentation in Nazi Germany and look what they accomplished…

I hope that the VA has EAP to hook people up with therapists. Being on the retired side and watching this is gut wrenching, I can not fathom how they are working through this. 💔

64

u/touslesmatins BSN, RN 🍕 4h ago

I don't have high hopes. The statement released by the VA was weak as shit and tried to both sides the issue instead of standing up for Alex and against ICE.

31

u/kmm198700 4h ago

Doug Collins is a spineless piece of shit

23

u/NurseCait BSN, RN 🍕 3h ago

That’s typical of the VA. Extremely typical.

One thing I remember during my initial orientation and part of our yearly education modules was to remain politically neutral while at work and that an employee would get in huge trouble if they attended a political event and had on anything that identified them as a VA employee or used their position at the VA as leverage for anything.

It’s disgusting, really, considering what our nation’s Veterans have done on and off the battlefield to protect and serve our country in one capacity or another.

13

u/vivbot 2h ago

My favorite part about the "stay politicially neutral" thing is remembering when the VA sent out a pre-shutdown e-mail blaming Democrats with every other sentence. The mental gymnastics is... somethin'.

4

u/NurseCait BSN, RN 🍕 2h ago

Without a doubt. I miss my patients and my co-worker. But definitely do not miss the politics of the VA itself.

18

u/Manungal BSN, RN 🍕 3h ago

No one in admin at our VA could find their spine with both hands and a flashlight.

96

u/NurseCait BSN, RN 🍕 4h ago

Thankfully they do. I am a former VA employee, but still in nursing and this has hit a chord that I didn’t know was possible. Really, it could have been any of us. Any nurse who stands up for human kindness and decency. Heck, if I wasn’t ill, that could have been me in south Minneapolis, in front of Glam Doll. It’s just heart wrenching.

25

u/katieka_boom BSN, RN 🍕 3h ago

This is sitting heavy with me also. A few years ago I ended up in the middle of a life or death situation, because someone needed help, and I was close enough to do that. It was stupid, because I could have been another victim, but that thought never occurred to me at that moment. The speed at which the reflex to run to that person hit me, I didn't have time to think about anything else.

I imagine that Alex also felt that same reflex to help when he saw his fellow protester in distress. And a gang of knuckle-dragging Nazi thugs murdered him in the street because of it. We are not angry enough.

12

u/dumpsterdigger RN - ER 🍕 3h ago

I work in MN as a nurse and have been to that VA many times as a paramedic. It is a hard place to get employed at. That VA is one of the biggest in the country and Minnesota hospital systems all have similar benefits. All hospitals here I have worked at have EAP or similar programs for employees.

I would be shocked if they didn't have something.

u/SoupOk4169 28m ago

I work at a rural critical access hospital and was just circulating in a surgery. The surgeon, the first assist, both scrubs and even the Rep were all agreed that Alex deserved to get shot because he went to a protest armed.

It amazes me how quick all these 2nd Amendment MAGA fucks are to overlook someone's constitutional right to bear arms if that person is on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Just like they think the 1st Amendment only applies to speach they agree with.

I honestly think these hypocrites on the Right have lost all sense of compassion and human decency. If they ever had any to start with, that is.

They are sycophants with zero moral compass. If they feel comfortable saying that out loud at work we shouldn’t be afraid to confront them in person, too.

I don't see how people can't see the difference between going to a protest defensively armed verses going to a protest with the intent to injure. Those are two different things (looking at you Kyle Rittenloser).

And you're right, people offended at the idea of someone bringing a gun to a protest are the same people who would protest (armed) if their "right to bears arms" was at risk.

The thing the public will not see, is that each and everyone of these people then left this hall and went back into patient's rooms and kept taking care of them. I don't work bedside any more, but that was always the hardest part of the job.

As a Veteran, and now a Nurse, the care and compassion from VA Nurses is beyond match. They deal with some unique health disparities and an extremely challenging (no offense brothers and sisters) patient population. But they always give it their all.

My heart breaks for Alex Pretti. I’ve been crying since I learned about this. I’m mad. I’m upset. I know some of the nurses are quietly agreeing to the black propaganda they’re throwing against him.

And yes, I know that some nurses I work with are not even affected by this. Coz they think it was his fault being there. Again, these are the same people who refused to take the vaccine citing religious exemption saying their body is a temple while it is covered with tattoos and at the same time refused to take care of COVID pts during the pandemic! Yes, I still work with some of them.

Some are saying nursing is not politics. Everything around us is politics. The food, medicine, transportation, research, clothing, and even the toilet paper is politics. Politics put people in position to decide for us. I cry and cringe when some coworkers say, “oh, I don’t vote coz I don’t think it’s gonna make a difference”. No kidding sh*t head! You just gave that shot to the other side. All they do is complain, but offer no valid solutions. I digress.

Alex Pretti, you are our hero. I will remember your name for the rest of my life. As a former ICU nurse, I know we have lost one of our best! Rest now, Alex. We will make sure that your sacrifice is not in vain. 🥹🥹🥹

I'm so glad I'm not working today. My coworkers say there has been no email, no moment of silence, no acknowledgement so far today. Tons of nursing associations and groups are putting out statements of support, why can't all of our hospitals?! If there's nothing by tomorrow when I get there I don't know what I'll do, but it's sure not gonna be nothing.

Fuck ICE and every single one who voted for DJT! I am in Europe and I wait for the day when Agent Orange goes bananas and starts WW3. I don't want to live on this planet anymore. Fuck Trump!!!

4

u/jeropian-moth 4h ago

Interestingly, Trump and his administration did say directly attack federal workers over and over and over again just to make them suffer. Russel Vought even stated that he wanted to traumatize federal employees.

u/TheMidnightProfessor 4h ago

These pictures sadden me in so many ways, but it really honed in on something that I think is so important. This is a national tragedy. The trauma and grief from this moment has spread so far and wide. Imagine the absolute pain his coworkers feel. That impacts their life, their jobs, their relationships -- the damage spreads in so many ways. Ultimately, this represents one of those terrible moments in history; there was a before, and now there is an after.

4

u/Prize_Environment944 4h ago

Honestly, I just hope the people who voted for the one in the White House see what's happening. Even for a fraction of them to regret their decision, I haven't met anyone who regrets their decision yet, you're either on that side or this side. I just hope there are people who are opening their eyes and using their brains again.

RIP Alex

4

u/Scuptor-1111 2h ago

Do you know how many years it takes to become an ICU NURSE. Years of practice I worked in Pediatric ICU. LA. It was with children of all ages the sweetest most poignant job. Alex was helping someone up the mounds of snow. Alex had a phone in his THAT’S ALL. HIS STUDENT NURSE told us who he was. The Heart of every nurse there is a calling to service as a PROFESSIONAL. No one really gets or appreciate what we do everyday for 12 hours of constant work are so difficult and are lonely. Because you can never really explain to anyone the heartache if you lose someone. Alex was a hero in plain clothes.

Good man. Didn’t deserve to be shot like a dog. There needs to be prosecution of out of control ice agents - what they are doing violates the constitution and the spirit of America . We are a nation of immigrants- you can’t just do Kavanaugh stops in people because they have brown skin- that shit evil. Also, the crime for observing m, protesting or blocking traffic is not death. Due process, freedom of speech, are bedrock principles.

I’ve been on and off crying all day. My first day back is tomorrow, planning on placing a black band on my ID and ordered a badge reel from Snarky Nurses - what else are we doing in solidarity? I just know it could’ve been any one of us out there trying to help a woman up. May we all have the strength and empathy to advocate like Alex while caring for those who need it most.

I'm not a nurse but come from a big, long family line of nurses (I can barely cope with my own vomit so I am a family disappointment for not going the same route).

Just... Thank you. For everything. For being the front line. For being so kind. For standing up for patients. To anyone reading this. Thank you.

I am devastated about Alex's death and my heart goes out to his family and friends and have no idea what they do, but I really feel for his colleagues. I'm glad they got to have this minute but that's it. Then back to keeping people alive.

I hope justice is served and those who knew Alex are proud to have known him. And if you didn't know him, are proud to know someone like him. Always putting other people first. Give them a hug from me.

I hope you all keep yourselves safe - physically and mentally.

It's kinda meaningless but I am sending as much love as I can send over the Internet.

I am so sorry there was even a reason to need this mournful moment. Both beautiful and devastating, and no words can match the emotions and reactions to this.

It is so hard to not speak about this in a way that isn’t political. I think my one response to this moment that comes second only to how devastatingly this all occurred, is that a common line regarding 2A enthusiasts is that the intent was to ensure the people could defend themselves if ever a tyrannical government attempted to subdue and take over this countries citizens.

And here we are. In this moment. And I’m just lost and saddened that those same 2A enthusiasts are today hyper politicizing exactly this with rage and hate for a person who was unfortunately in this moment and lost his life because he had his gun on him, not holding it and not threatening a soul by saying he would use it.

I’m sad. Alex deserves to be recognized for his work and contributions to this life, and mourned for those things being taken away from all of you, his colleagues and loved ones. Nothing about that is okay, and it shouldn’t be. My heart breaks at your loss, and with all of my heart, I wish you peace and healing in the coming times. ♥️

I know this makes no actual impact on anything for you all or those who know him, but I will be lighting a candle and spending a moment of silence and reflection for him and you who have lost him. I am so sorry for your loss.

I do wonder how many of Pretti’s co-workers and patients are red voters and if they ever considered the orange felon’s violent hate-mongering would touch them in some way. Problem is that tRmp’s violence is like cancer. It metastasizes and is quickly out of control.

u/Sad_Knowledge7722 43m ago

I hope one day America respects healthcare workers. And I hope one day the Trump admin values humans. Until then, we have only each other.

u/seasage777 26m ago

Why do the good die young while evil just continues living?

u/whatsthetime1010 21m ago

It would be quite something if all VA nursing/medical/support staff quit and find work outside of the govt sector. Give them what they want; to shut down the VA, and further disincentivize military service.

u/One_Alternative_5898 8m ago

A moment of silence they should not be having to hold.

u/Worried-History8216 6m ago

Since the government doesn't think the constitution matters, laws are only enforced depending on your party of choice, I don't understand why the medical community doesn't start asking to see your social media before treating you. If they don't have the same views as you, don't treat them.

I know that there is probably an oath that you have to agree to, but from what I see happening in the United States, that doesn't matter anymore. If the government changes the rules, so can you.
